John Thomas Moroney

Sussex - John T. "Jack" "Jake" Moroney, age 70, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Newton Medical Center. Born in the Astoria section of Queens, New York, John was the son of the late Thomas R. Moroney and Rosalie (Waders) Moroney. He later made his home in Sussex Borough, where he became a familiar and friendly face to many. John retired from Picatinny Arsenal, where he worked as a draftsman for many years. While he was dedicated to his career, it was his generous heart and kind spirit that truly defined him. Known to family and friends as "Jack" and "Jake," he always put others before himself and was the kind of person who would do anything for anyone. He never met a stranger, striking up conversations wherever he went and leaving with a new friend. John found great joy in music, especially the Beatles. He loved playing his guitar, and it became a familiar sight for neighbors to see him sitting on his porch sharing music with anyone who happened to pass by. John had a lifelong passion for cars and NASCAR. He also had a special place in his heart for animals, especially cats. He faithfully cared for the stray cats that gathered around his home, making sure they were always fed and looked after. John is survived by his loving son, Thomas J. Moroney and his wife, Laura of Sussex; his daughter, Stefanie Hotalen and her husband, William Hotalen, Jr. of Sussex; his sisters, Sue Tinghino and her husband, Paul of Brick Township and Jill Shedlock of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania; his cherished grandchildren, Harper, Hudson, Lucas, and Kacey; and his former wife of 28 years, Eileen Moroney. He also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, and neighbors who will remember his kindness, generosity, music, and the genuine friendship he shared so freely. Friends may pay their respects to the family on Saturday, August 8, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Pinkel Funeral Home, 31 Bank Street (Route 23), Sussex with a service immediately following at 3 p.m. at the funeral home to celebrate John's life.
