John J. Occhipinti Jr.

Lord’s Valley, PA - John J. Occhipinti, Jr., age 67, unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at his residence. Born in Westwood, New Jersey on September 7, 1959, John grew up in Lodi, New Jersey before moving to Lords Valley, PA. John dedicated his career to the Scranton Times, where he worked as a printer until his retirement. He took great pride in his work and in the many years he spent as part of the newspaper. A man who could fix just about anything, John was happiest when he had a project in front of him. He loved working on cars and could often be found with his hands busy repairing, building, or improving something. If something was broken, John was the person you called. He had a natural ability to figure things out and wasn't afraid to take something apart to see how it worked. John had a deep love of music, especially Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. Music was an important part of his life, and his favorite songs could often be heard playing in the background. He also loved being on the water. His boat brought him many happy days spent on the river and at Lake Wallenpaupack, where he enjoyed the peace and freedom of being out on the water. John was fascinated by technology and enjoyed keeping up with the latest gadgets and figuring out how things worked. But despite all of his hobbies and interests, what mattered most to John was being home with his family. He loved spending time with them and was always involved in whatever house project was happening. Whether he was fixing something, working on a project, or simply being together, home was where John was happiest. John will be remembered for his helpful nature, his curiosity, his love of fixing things, his appreciation for music, and, most importantly, the love he had for his family. His presence, his stories, his laughter, and his willingness to lend a hand will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Though he may no longer be here to fix what is broken or lend a hand with the next project, the things John built, the memories he created, and the love he shared with his family will remain with them always. John was predeceased by his mother, Carmela (Camp) Occhipinti and his step-sons, John E. VanGorden, Jr. on August 14, 2018 and William D. VanGorden on October 21, 2021. He is survived by his devoted wife, Doris J. Van Orden; his cherished children, John Edward Occhipinti, Brittany Starr and Kayla Starr; his step-daughter, Nicole VanGorden; his brother, Timothy; his father, John J. Occhipinti, Sr.; his sisters, Judith, Patty, Robin, and Tara; two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Archie. Private cremation services have been entrusted to the Pinkel Funeral Home, 31 Bank Street (Route 23), Sussex. A celebration of life will be held privately in the future.
